As the capital and the largest city of Henan Province, Zhengzhou actually has two airports, one is Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (郑州新郑国际机场, IATA: CGO, often short for Zhengzhou Airport or Xinzheng Airport) and another is Zhengzhou Shangjie Airport (郑州上街机场, IATA: HSJ).

Zhengzhou Shangjie Airport is the special site of annual Zhengzhou Air Show. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport is the only civil airport of passenger transport in Zhengzhou. Until September, 2020, it has over 200 air routes with more than 110 cities at home and abroad. Air travelers thus can fly from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other connected cities to Zhengzhou and transfer to Luoyang, Dengfeng, Kaifeng and other cities in Henan.

Domestic Flights to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport

Putting into operation in August, 1997, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport is an international civil airport and one of the eight regional hub airports of China. At present, the airports has more than 200 air routes (including over 25 international and regional lines) to around 110 cities with main Chinese cities and some hot destinations in Asia. Meanwhile, it operates a few new international regular passenger routes to Cambodia, Malaysia, Burma, Russia, Philippines and UK.

The airport is the base for 5 airline companies, which are China South Airlines, China West Air and so on. There are totally two terminals, Terminal 2 is the only one in service now and it plans to build a new one by 2025.

Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport Transportation

Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport lies about 40 km southeast of Zhengzhou City, about 40 - 50 minutes by taxi and its ground transportation is quiet convenient to downtown area, including airport shuttle bus, subway, city bus, taxi and intercity train.

● Airport Shuttle Bus

There are altogether 5 airport shuttle bus lines running from the airport to urban area. All buses depart from Gate 2 on the ground floor of Terminal 2. If you want to take bus to Dengfeng Shaolin Temple from Zhengzhou, you can take the Airport Bus Line 6 to get to Zhengzhou Railway Station. The buses leave the airport between 08:40 to the last arrival flight, and it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to get to the West Square of the railway station. Then you can take a taxi or subway to Zhengzhou Long-distance Bus Center Station (郑州长途汽车中心站) to take a 2 hours’ bus to Shaolin Temple. (Buses running returning to the airport dispatch from the bus station every half an hour between 06:30 and 20:30.)

● Taxi

Taking a taxi is very conveninet to get to downtown and around Zhengzhou. Passengers who want to take a taxi leaving the airport need to walk to the south corridor between 2nd floor of the airport GTC (Ground Transfer Center) and Terminal 2. If many flights arrive at the same time, you may queue up for your turn. Getting to the downtown by a taxi needs about 40 to 50 minutes, and 35 minutes to Zhengzhou Railway Station or Zhengzhou East Railway Station.

● Subway

Zhengzhou Metro Line 9 (also called Chengjiao Metro Line 城郊线), opened in 2017, has stations from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport to the South Fourth Ring Road. Tourists can take Line 9, and transfer to linked Metro Line 2 to city center, or continue take Metro Line 1 to get to Zhengzhou Railway Station (about 1 hour 15 minutes) and Zhengzhou East Railway Station (about 1.5 hours).

The subway station is located at basement 2F of the airport GTC, Terminal 2 and Metro Line 9 runs between 06:00 and 21:00 each day.

● Intercity Train

Zhengzhou Airport Intercity Railway was opened in 2015, and conveniently connected to Zhengzhou Kaifeng Intercity Railway and Zhengzhou Jiaozuo Intercity Railway. The intercity railway is nearly 30 km long and delivers direct fast trains from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport to Zhengzhou Railway Station (about 25 minutes, 4 trains per day) and Zhengzhou East Railway Station (17 minutes, about 10 c trains per day). You need to get down to the basement 2F to take the intercity train.

● City Bus

There are some city buses starting from the ground floor to nearby suburbs of the airport, such as Bus 638, Y636, 613, 612 and 611. This is not recommended for tourists.

● Intercity Bus

From west of the 1F of GTC, you can take intercity bus to Luoyang, Kaifeng, Anyang, Jiaozuo, Xinxiang directly. There are over 30 intercity bus routes, and major destinations have frequent buses every day.

If you travel with a lot of luggage, you better take a taxi from the airport to your hotel or transfer to downtown. The intercity train is highly suggested for getting to city center within half an hour if you have a good direction without language barriers and like to experience local transport. If you want to visit Luoyang (about 2.5 hours) and Kaifeng from the airport, it's advised to take an intercity bus.

How to Plan Your Zhengzhou Tour

With convenient flight and train network, Zhengzhou is more used as a transport hub in Henan. Usually, tourists make a Shaolin Temple day tour via Zhengzhou, visit the Pagoda Forest and main temple architectures and closely watch a wonderful Shaolin Kung Fu show in a leisured pace or leave half day for a Mount Song hiking trip.
