Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (成都天府国际机场) is located in Lujia Town, Jianyang, East high tech Zone, Chengdu, 50km away from Tianfu Square. It is the largest civil transport hub airport project. It is positioned as the national international aviation hub and the highest level airport in the Silk Road Economic belt. It will be responsible for all international routes of Chengdu's departure, and will be built into a "first-class international and domestic airport" airport. Phase I project of the airport is designed to meet the target of having an initial capacity of 40 million passengers, 70,000 tons of cargo and mail throughput and 30,000 aircraft take-off and landing by 2025. Three new runways will be built, with a terminal area of 608,000 square meters; the grade of the flight area is 4F, and the total aircraft resources are 245. In the long-term project, three more runways will be built. The total area of the airport terminal is 980,000 square meters, meeting the annual passenger throughput demand of 90 million people.
By 2021, Chengdu will enter the era of dual airports, becoming the third city in mainland China with dual international airports. On May 27, 2016, the construction of the airport started in an all-round way, and the first phase of the project is planned to be basically completed by the end of 2020.
The configuration of the two terminals take the unique mythical figure of the ancient Sichuan - golden sunbird, which implies that the ancient civilization has experienced more than 3,000 years of inheritance and growth in this magical land of Chengdu.
The building itself is about 330,000 square meters, equivalent to 46 standard football fields with 5 floors above ground and 2 floors underground.
The first three runways are to be completed in phase one of construction and the rest three runways are be completed in phase two, all crossing the terminals. From the circular core, 6 arms stretch outwards with both terminals mirroring the other and embracing the aircrafts.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is located in the southeast outskirts of Chengdu. It is about 50km to Tianfu Square (Chengdu City Center), 51km to Chengdu Shaungliu Airport, 42km to Chengdu East Railway Station (high speed train station), 33km to Tianfu New City and 30km to Tianfu Railway Station.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has a very convenient transferring hall, which will be built into a comprehensive hub integrating multiple ways of transportation. It will also be more convenient to transfer between T1 and T2. It connects Chengdu city with high-speed rail, urban rail, subway, taxi, private car, long-distance bus, equipped with intelligent car system (PRT) at the parking lot. The proposed terminal area traffic center is located between the two terminals.
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is about 50km away from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. The projects planned to be constructed for the airport's external transportation which will include high-speed railway (Chengdu Chongqing high speed railway, Chengdu Kunming High Speed Railway), Metro (Chengdu metro line 18, Chengdu Metro Line 19, Chengdu metro line 20), expressway (Chengdu Tianfu International Airport Expressway) and fast tracks. The subway line 18 will be available for passengers to transfer to/off Tianfu New Railway Station which will be linked with Shuangliu Airport by Subway line 19, and linked with Chengdu East Railway Station by Subway line 20. Currently the subway lines are all under construction or test run. The detailed stations and timetables are not released yet.
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is the second stop of Chengdu-Zigong Intercity Railway which is still under construction. This high-speed railway starts from Chengdu East Railway Station, goes southward to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport with a scheduled speed of 350km/h, and keeps running to Zigong via Ziyang, Zizhong, and Weiyuan. It takes only about 30min from Chengdu East Railway Station to the new airport. The section from Chengdu East Railway Station to the new airport is supposed to put into use by the operation of Tianfu International Airport.
By Tianfu International Airport Expressway, it only takes half an hour from Chengdu first ring expressway to Tianfu International Airport. Tianfu International Airport Expressway starts from Chengdu Ring Expressway, connecting the Third Ring Road and ends at Chengdu Economic Zone ring expressway. The expressway line passes through Jinjiang District, Longquanyi District, Shuangliu district and Jianyang City.
