- From - To: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG)
The over 5 daily flights from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) whisk you from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie in only 2.5 hours around. Most of the flights depart from Shanghai in the early evening. And that means you could even have a half-day tour in Shanghai and then catch a flight to Zhangjiajie.
Tourist tip: the flights traveling back from Zhangjiajie to Shanghai also make departures after 18:00 every day. In your last day of Zhangjiajie tour, you could also have a half-day tour in Zhangjiajie first and then catch a flight to Shanghai.
2. Shanghai to Zhangjiajie Train - Cheapest But the Most Time-consuming
- Duration: 18.5-20.5 hours
- From - To: Shanghai South Railway Station (上海南站) to Zhangjiajie Railway Station (张家界站)/ Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站)
At present, there are only normal trains between Shanghai and Zhangjiajie, it will be really cheap (CNY 189.5 - 488.5). However, the train journey will take at least 18.5 hours. 3. Shanghai to Zhangjiajie via Changsha or Huaihua - Great Alternative Options
If you want to experience the fast China Bullet Trains, you can also make a transfer via the cities near Zhangjiajie and with bullet trains to/from Shanghai. The capital city Changsha of Hunan Province is the best choice as it is only 4 hours’ drive from Zhangjiajie and has about 28 daily bullet trains from Shanghai. The trains travel from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) to Changsha South Railway Station in about 4.5-6 hours. Besides, there are many high speed train from Changsha Railway Station to Zhangjiajie West Statio, which needs only 2.5-3.5 hours. It usually takes 0.5 hour to transfer from Changsha South Railway Station to Changsha Railway Station by car or Changsha Metro Line 2.
Huaihua will be the best stopover city if you want to visit the elegant Fenghuang Ancient Town first. The trains travel from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) in the morning and arrive at Huaihua South Railway Station (怀化南站) in the late afternoon or early evening. The train journey needs about 6.5 -7.5 hours. Once step out from the Huaihua South Railway Station, you could find direct coaches to Fenghuang Ancient Town directly. How to plan a Shanghai Zhangjiajie Tour
6 days or so is needed for a Shanghai Zhangjiajie tour. You can spend about 1-2 days to discover Shanghai, the most modern city of China. Then catch a flight to Zhangjiajie to explore its magnificent natural views.
Leave yourself about 2-3 days to indulge in the Hallelujah Mountains, villages, streams and forests inside the huge Wulingyuan Scenic Area (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is one part of Wulingyuan). Then have a one-day tour to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon to have a thrilling glass bridge walking experience or Tianmen Mountain to get more surprise from nature.
