Gulangyu Island, the Sea Garden, is located southwest of Xiamen City. Visitors can reach it by ferry boat from Xiamen City in about 5 minutes. Ranked at the top of the ten most-scenic areas in Fujian, Gulangyu Island is renowned for its delicate natural beauty, ancient relics and varied architectures.

It first became important in 1842 after the signing of the treaty of Nanking. It soon grew into European-style town with churches, consulates, and specious villas. In 1903, it was designated an International Settlement for Europeans and Japanese. So, the island still retains an atmosphere reminiscent of Southern Europe. Spread over nearly 2.5 sq.km, Gulangyu is very pleasant to explore on foot, with its tiny streets and elegant houses, fronted by pretty flowers gardens. The must see attractions are: Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden & Piano Museum etc.

South Putuo Temple

No.2: South Putuo Temple (Nanputuo Temple)

South Putuo Temple, surrounded by graceful sea and the Wulao Peaks, is one of the must-go tourist places in Xiamen. The location is great, close to Xiamen University and Lu River.

South Putuo Temple was founded in the Tang Dynasty, the monks who inhabited the place has established it into a Buddhist sacred land. It used to have different names. And the general named it after the Buddhist holy site Mount Putuo of Zhejiang Province, which is considered the abode of Guanyin. When you come you’ll see the Hall of Heavenly Kings Daxiong Hall, the Hall of Great Compassion and a Pavilion built in 1936 in which Buddhist scriptures, Buddha images from Burma, ivory sculptures and other works of art are stored. Don’t miss the treasure of Buddhism.

Hulishan Fortress

No.3: Hulishan Fortress (Huli Mountain Fort)

Located at the southern coast of Xiamen Island, Hulishan Fortress guards the Chinese shore for over a century now. It was recognized as an important historical site and preserved by government. First built in 1894, during the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty, it has always been an important landmark in the island’s history, also serving a key role to the country defense against the Japanese in 1900.

In Hulishan Fortress, you’ll have in-depth exploration of the granite castle, which occupies an area of 13.000 square meters, a commanding tower, an ammunition depot, a sentry platform and barracks.

Earth Buildings of Yongding

The Hakka People were driven south from the Yellow River plains by War in the late Tang and Early Song Dynasties. It is perhaps due to their past experience of persecution, and their presence in a new land that they adopted a fortress-like style of rammed earth buildings called Tulou.

Yongding Earth Buildings were praised by UNESCO as “mythological mountain village architecture unmatched in the world”. There are over 4,000 earth buildings in Yongding, designed by the Chinese philosophy, structurally either square or round. The most famous ones are: Chuxi Tulou Cluster, Hongkeng Tulou Cluster, Gaobei Tulou Cluster. Among all the earth buildings, Zhencheng Building is the most magnificent. Nanjing Earth Buildings

Nanjing County is the hometown for over 15,000 earth buildings of different shapes, height and other characteristics. Besides the round shape we usually see, there are also other rare shapes of the building such as fan shape, turriform shape, umbrella shape and other ones, 16 kinds in total.

And more importantly, this area covers the tallest, smallest, biggest and the most complete ancient earth buildings. The biggest one-Shuyang Shunyu building was built in 1937 with a 4-floor structure of 288 rooms, while the smallest one-Cuilin building covers only 36 rooms in total. The magical Mount Wuyi could be divided into four core parts: the Nine-Bend Stream Stream Ecological Protection Area in the center, flanked by the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve to the west and the Wuyishan National Scenic Area to the east. The fourth part, the Protection Area for the Remains of Ancient Han Dynastyis located in a separate area about 15km to the south-east of the others.The best way to enjoy the landscape is to take a raft along the river, as it meanders through gorges known collectively as Nine Bend Greek. Jimei School Village

Jimei School Village, as one of the major scenic spots in Xiamen, is located on the other side of the bank facing north Xiamen Island. It was founded by the philanthropist Tan KahKee (Chen Jiageng) in 1913. A successful Singapore Businessman, he returned to China in 1950 and held various government posts. He founded the Jimei Schools and also Xiamen University.

Occupying an area of 100,000 sq. meters, Jimei School Village has universities, colleges, secondary schools, primary schools and kindergartens with 10,000 students and teachers. It not only enjoy a long-term fame for the various schools, but also its tourists attractions like Turtle Garden ,Returnees Garden and the former residence of Mr. Tan Kah-Kee.
