Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province, has a continental monsoon climate and an elevation of 800 meters. It has four distinct seasons with dry spring, sweltering summer, cool autumn and cold winter. The month with the most sunshine in Taiyuan is May, with an average of 8.6h of sunshine. Unlike many other cities of China, which may suffer from very high temperature and sometimes heavy rain, Taiyuan enjoys lower temperature and less rain. The average temperature is about 23°C. July is the warmest month of the whole year and the average temperature is around 24°C. June and July are the months with the highest UV index in Taiyuan, with an average maximum UV index of 10. August is the month with most rainfall, and the weather will be quite cool when it rains.
What to Wear: It is important to prepare sun block shirt, sun hat and sun glasses to protect your skin from the strong sunlight. Umbrella is also helpful in case that it rains. As for clothes, linen shirts, thin skirts, thin T-shirts and other breathable clothes are enough for the day time. It is cold in winter. December has the least sunshine of the year, with an average of 5.2h of sunshine. January is the coldest month with an average high-temperature of 1.8°C (35.2°F) and an average low-temperature of -11.6°C (11.1°F). Because of the low temperature, very few travelers choose to visit Taiyuan in winter. Therefore, if you want to enjoy the peaceful environment, winter is a good season.

How to get to Taiyuan: High speed train from Beijing (3 hrs), Xian (3-4 hrs), Pingyao (40min), etc. and flights from Beijing (1.5h), Shanghai (2.5h), Chongqing (2h), Chengdu (2h10min), Wuhan (2h), etc.
Where to Stay: Hotels in downtown area, with quick access to the tourist attractions, airport, trains stations and shopping malls.
