The annual temperature of Nanjing averages 15 °C. The average temperature in summer is about 35 °C and the highest temperature may reach to 40 °C. The average temperature in winter is about 4 °C and the lowest temperature may drop to below 0 °C. There are averagely about 120 days for raining, with the annual precipitation of 1,106.5 mm. The plum rain period is from the late June to the early July.

Best Time to Visit Nanjing

Generally, if you want to see Nanjing’s historical and cultural charm which won’t be changed by weather, you can visit Nanjing all year round apart from the scorching summer. If you want to enjoy the most comfortable climate and the most picturesque natural beauty, the best recommended time are the periods from March to June and from September to November, especially in late October and early November when the most breathtaking autumn view can be appreciated.

Nanjing Weather in Spring (March, April, May)

Average Temperature: 5 °C ~ 26 °C, windy, chilly and getting warm gradually

When spring comes, the temperature begins to rise gradually, but it is still a little cold in early March. If you visit in spring, you can feast your eyes on numerous flowers, such as peach blossoms, plum flowers, orchids, sakuras, begonias, etc. which are blooming to make this antique city into a gorgeous lady. You can enjoy a leisurely walk in the beautiful parks or around the peaceful lakes.

Seasonal Activities:
1) Visit Nanjing City Wall to see the locals exercising, photographing, drawing, etc., imagine the ancient life of Nanjing people and admire the plum blossoms.
2) Go to Purple Mountain to enjoy the romantic natural scenery, like the orchids.
3) Take a boat on Xuanwu Lake which is really elegant in spring with the soft wind and vigorous scenery making by wonderful sakuras and begonia flowers.
4) Enjoy Mochou Lake – a charming lake full of various kinds of begonias and hydrangea blossoms which can be called the real valley of flowers.

What to Wear & Pack:
Thick sweaters and woolen coats will be helpful to keep you warm in the early spring, especially at night when the temperature is lower. It will be quite warmer in mid-to-late spring, so long-sleeves shirts and thin knitwear are recommended. You can also dress in layers and it is easy to take off if it gets warmer.

Located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and surrounded by some hills or mountains which are unfavorable for heat dissipation, Nanjing has a quite hot summer. Therefore, visiting Nanjing in summer is not recommended, especially in July and August. If you insist in a summer holiday in Nanjing, remember to get up early for sightseeing.

Since the temperature is very high in summer, you need to prepare breathable and light clothes. Besides, it is important to bring sun cream, sunglasses, sunhat and other items to protect your skin from the strong sunlight. Drink more water.
