No.1: Wudangzhao Monastery

Surrounded by mountains, Wudangzhao Monastery is located about 70 km northeast of Baotou. It is the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia. Wudangzhao Monastery is also one of the four major temples of Tibetan Buddhism together with the Potala Palace in Tibet, Ta’er Monastery in Qinghai and Labuleng Temple in Gansu.

Built during the reign of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty, Wudangzhao Monastery has a history of 250 years. It is composed of six halls for chanting Buddhist scriptures, three Living Buddha mansions, one mausoleum and multiple lama dormitories. All of the buildings have a Tibetan-style, flat-topped and square structure. There is also a large collection of Buddhist art in the lamasery, ranging from ancient sculptures to murals of gold, silver, copper, wood and even soil. A visit to Wudangzhao Monastery is a good chance to know the history and culture of Buddhism and minorities in Inner Mongolia.

No.2: Xilamuren Grassland

Xilamuren Grassland is located in the northeast of Baotou. Though it is located in Baotou, it is better to reach Xilamuren Grassland from Hohhot, just 88 km away from this capital city.

Xilamuren, which means “Yellow Water” in Mongolia, is also known as ZhaoHe because of an old Lama Temple along the Xilamuren riverside. Traditional Mongolia culture can be found throughout the grassland. Travelers could enjoy a range of cultural pursuits, such as visit of herdsman house, the Mongolian traditional welcome ceremony, sumptuous Mongolian cuisine, Mongolia wrestling. A variety of outdoor activities including camel riding, sand skating and sand sculpture, are also available. The best time to visit the Xilamuren Grassland is in summer and early autumn. What’s more, during the Nadam Fair held every summer, you can even take part in some of the competitions that you are interested in.

No.3: Meidaizhao Monastery

Meidaizhao Monastery is located on the midway between Baotou and Hohhot. It is 50 km from Baotou. It is one of the most important centers for spreading Tibetan Buddhism in Inner Mongolia. Meidaizhao Temple was built in 1575 by the Mongol leader Alatan Khan, a direct descendant of Genhis Khan. The architecture is a mixture of central China style with Tibetan and Mongolian features. It contains temples, royal palaces, enclosing walls and city gates. It is more of a walled city than a lamasery.

Meidaizhao Monastery is of great importance for the study of Mongolian history of religion, architecture and arts in the Ming Dynasty. Upon entering the gateway to the lamasery, travelers could see the Hall of Sakyamuni (Sakyamuni being the founding father of Buddhism). Every year on May 13 of lunar calendar, there is a traditional Medaizhao Temple Fair. The fair lasts about a whole week. Many people gather here not only for worshipping or sightseeing, but also for trading and selling local products and agricultural products.

How to Get to Baotou

The transportation in Baotou is very convenient. It is the important transportation hub connecting north and northwest China with highway, railway and air.
● Baotou Airport operates scheduled flights to many cities of China like Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Taiyuan, Chengdu etc.
● From Baotou Railway Station and Baotou East Railway Station, travelers could take trains to Hohhot, Beijing, Tianjin, Xian, Datong, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Taiyuan etc. As the two train stations are far away from each other, please make sure which station you’ll go before you are ready to catch the train.
● The express highway connects Baotou and Hohhot with 2 hours’ transfer.
