Jiuxiang Cave, also known as Jiuxiang Scenic Region (九乡风景区) is located in the mountainous area in Jiuxiang Yi and Hui Autonomous Township of Yiliang County with an elevation between 1750m to 1900m. It is 30km from the Stone Forest and 90km from Kunming city center.

Green and Shady Valley - quiet and elegant retreats

Green and Shady Valley (荫碧峡), also called the Valley of Love for it was the place for local young men and women to sing songs in order to find lovers. The valley stretches for about 600m, flanked with verdant trees. You can take a boat ride through the valley and hear the voices echoing off the cliffs. The picturesque landscape is unforgettable, many poets had written touching poems there.

Grand Underground Valley - blood-surging and impressive valley

The Grand Underground Valley, also known as the Terrifying Gorge (惊魂峡) is 700 meters long, is currently the most spectacular underground valley found in China. The two sides of the cliff is straightly down like been cut by a knife and axe. From the bottom of the valley to the top of the cave is nearly 100m, the narrowest place is only 3 to 4 meters, visitors can experience the thrilling feeling.

Grand Lion Hall - the setting for the movie “The Myth”

The Grand Lion Hall (雄狮厅) is the largest underground hall in the world, with a total area of 15,000 square meters, tourists holding capacity can reach 10,000 people. What is so remarkable about this place is that the top of the hall is made of a complete plate inlaid with several sinuous eddies but hasn’t got any pillars. The construction of the top plate is perfect and seamless.

Fairy Palace - dainty and exquisite stalactite

Wandering around the Fairy Palace (神女宫), visitors can enjoy the typical underground Karst landscape. Stalactites are exquisite, nestled close to each other like fairies singing and dancing in the palace, contend in beauty and fascination. The dreamlike scenery gives people an illusion of being in a fairyland.

Twin Waterfalls - earthshaking verve of the waterfall

Twin Waterfalls (雌雄飞瀑) is two waterfalls cascade down from the rock at a length of 30 meters and meet in a deep pool at a depth of 10 meters in Wolong Cave. The two waterfalls fall straight down with a maximum flow of 320 cubic meters per second, making a deafening sound. The powerful and magnificent momentum of the water makes the two waterfalls like two inseparable lovers. It’s really a rare wonder of caves in China.

Fairy Field - the natural made wonder of stony terrace

The total area of the Fairy Field (神田) is about 100 square meters, more than 10m deep. It is praised as the most amazing cave scenery by international speleologists. Layers of stalagmites, highlighted with colored lights, look like terraced fields. There is a huge conical stalactite shaped like a grain of cereal, bathed in a gold-yellow light.

Bat Cave - the underground Stone Forest

The Bat Cave (蝙蝠洞), also known as Underground Upside Down Stone Forest, is a magic scene formed by different directions of air flow. The stone forest here is characterized by its great and irregular inclination.

Best Touring Route of Jiuxiang Cave

Route : Green Shady Valley - Grand Underground Valley - Grand Lion Hall - Fairy Palace - Diehong Bridge - Twin Waterfalls - Fairy Field - Yi Minority Village - Bat Cave

After going through the entrance of Jiuxiang Scenic Area, you can take the Sightseeing Elevator down to the Green Shady Valley, taking a boat through the narrow gorge and at the end of the boat trip; you can walk along the path through the Grand Underground Valley. Passing through the Valley brings you to Grand Lion Hall, an underground oval hall with a pitched vault. Close to the Grand Hall is Fairy Palace, different-shaped stalactites and stalagmites that highlighted with colored light would definitely dazzle you. Then Crossing the Diehong Bridge, you will see the imposing Twins Waterfalls in Wolong Cave. Continuing on, there is the Fairy Field - the most famous rock formation of all Jiuxiang. Then you can go to Yi Minority Village to experience the local ethnic customs. Last stop is the Bat Cave, the well-known Underground upside down Stone Forest. Usually, it takes about 2-3 hours to go through the scenic area.

Where is Jiuxiang Cave & How to Get There

Jiuxiang Scenic Region is about 30km from the Stone Forest and 90km from Kunming city center, taking about 50mins and 2 hours by car separately. Tourists can get there by private car or bus transfer.

From Kunming City (By Coach)

For independent travelers who has limited budget can take the tour bus to Yiliang (宜良) at the Eastern Bus Station (昆明东部客运站) in Kunming, then transfer to bus No.21 to Jiuxiang Scenic Area at Yiliang Bus Station (宜良客运站). The whole journey takes about 3 hours.

From the Stone Forest

Most travelers would visit Jiuxiang Cave and Kunming Stone Forest in the same day. Jiuxiang Cave is about 30km from the Stone Forest, takes about 50 minutes by car. There is no public transport connected two places, so if you want to tour these two places within a day, the most convenient way is by hiring a private car.

Entrance ticket for Jiuxiang Cave: CNY 90/person;

Cable car in the scenic area: CNY 30/person;

2. Wearing Tips

Travelers are highly suggested wear comfortable antiskid shoes during your Jiuxiang Cave trip, since there are lots of stone steps to walk and the high humidity inside the cave makes the road slippery.

3. Accommodation

Travelers can stay overnight in Shilin County after visit Jiuxiang Cave and Stone Forest within a day, there are also some 3-star hotels in the county. However, most travelers will choose to go back to Kunming for accommodation. 4. Weather and Best Time to Visit

Jiuxiang Scenic Region is located in a mountainous area; the climate is warm and cool all around the year. Jiuxiang Cave presents different landscapes in different seasons. It is suitable for travel all year round but summer is the best season, when you can take a boat through the valley and enjoy pleasant weather.

Strongly advise travelers to avoid visit Jiuxiang Cave during holidays such as the Labor’s Day (1st May to 5th May), Chinese National Day (1st October to 7th October) and Chinese Spring Festival etc.
