Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport (IATA: WUT)

Location: Wuweizhuang Village, Hongdao Town, Dingxiang County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province 山西省忻州市定襄县宏道镇无畏庄村

Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport is the only and nearest airport serving tourists to Mount Wutai and Xinzhou City. Put into operation at the end of 2015, this airport is a small airport dually used for civilian and military purpose. Currently, it has flights flying between Wutaishan and over 10 cities in China, including Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Tianjin, Xiamen, Changsha, Guiyang, Harbin, Shenyang, Baotou and Wenzhou. Tourists from abroad can also take irregular flights to Wutaishan Airport from Nha Trang in Vietnam.

As a feeder airport in north of Shanxi Province, Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport mainly offers convenience for Wutaishan tourists. According to latest flight schedules from the airlines, the airport operates flights to Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou and other Chinese cities as usual. Some flights are scheduled daily while some are seasonal. If you want to fly to Wutaishan from Beijing or Xian, you have to transfer via Nanjing or other directly connected cities. Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport Transportation - To Mount Wutai and Xinzhou City

● Get from Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport to Mount Wutai

Taihuai Town, the core of Mount Wutai, lies about 110 km northeast of Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport. After landing, there are local taxis or airport shuttle buses commuting between the airport and Mount Wutai. It takes about 2 hours to get to Taihuai Town by a taxi and airport shuttle bus costs a bit longer. It’s more recommended to take a taxi, because you can quickly transfer to your hotel straightforwardly.

Tips: Airport shuttle bus is scheduled according to the flight timetable of Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport. If you arrive quite late, taxi should be your first choice.

● Get from Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport to Xinzhou City

Xinzhou City is located about 40 km southwest of Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport, about 1 hour’s driving. Meanwhile, there are 3 airport shuttle buses running daily from the airport to downtown Xinzhou.

Yanmen Pass, a fortress along the Great Wall of Han Dynasty in Dai County, Xinzhou City is situated about 105 km north of Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport. If you want to visit the ancient pass from the airport, the driving needs 1.5 hours to 2 hours.

How to Get to Mount Wutai: You can get there by flights from Shanghai (2.5hrs), Chengdu (2.5hrs), Hangzhou (2hrs), etc. or travel to Mount Wutai from Datong, Pingyao, and Taiyuan by driving.

Best Time to Visit Mount Wutai - May to September: Bring your extra layers and umbrella/raincoat always.

A classic Mount Wutai tour usually starts from Taihuai Town, the tourist center of the entire scenic area, then takes a day to visit the most important temples of Mount Wutai, such as Xiantong Temple, Pusa Ding Temple, Tayuan Temple, etc. which are conveniently located around Taihuai Town. If you are Buddhists, you can take the Xiao Chaotai (Small Kora) to Dailuo Ding Temple if you are short on time, or go to the high-altitude Five Terraces to worship Manjusri Bodhisattvas on the five peaks of Mount Wutai – East Terrace, North Terrace, Central Terrace, West Terrace and South Terrace, which usually costs two full days.
