Where is Lijiang Old Town in Lijiang?

There are many old towns in Lijiang. When it comes to Lijiang Old Town, it usually refers to the largest Dayan Ancient Town (大研古城). The town is settled in the Lijiang City Center area, about 29km (40 minutes by car) to Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (丽江三义机场) and 8km (about half an hour by car) to Lijiang Railway Station (丽江站). Tourist can get to Lijiang Old Town by taxi, bus and private car.

Lijiang Airport to Old Town

• Time Needed: 40 minutes around

Lijiang has only one airport, named Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (丽江三义国际机场). The airport is about 29km south of Lijiang Old Town. To travel from the airport to the old town, you can ride a taxi, airport bus or private car.

The airport buses are scheduled according to the flight lines. Therefore, you can always find an airport bus after landing. However, the bus cannot take you to Lijiang Old Town directly, but to Lantian Hotel (蓝天宾馆) in Lijiang downtown, which is about 2km and 10 minutes around to Lijiang Old Town by taxi. Things will be less complicated if you go with a direct taxi or licensed private car (not the personal private cars but those offered by licensed travel agents). Taxi is available in both day and night.

Warm tip: It is always not a wise choice to travel with strangers in a place you're not familiar with, let alone few of them speak English. Therefore, you are not suggested to catch these personal private cars at the airport.

Lijiang Train Station to Old Town

• Time Needed: about half an hour

Lijiang has only one railway station offering train service for tourists, that is Lijiang Railway Station (丽江站). Lijiang Station sits between Lijiang Old Town and Lijiang Airport, with a driving distance for about 8km away from Lijiang Old Town. You can ride a taxi, bus or private car there.

Driving from Lijiang Station to Lijiang Old Town by taxi or private car takes about half an hour. If you travel with public No.4 bus, you will find a stop near the West Gate of Lijiang Old Town and a stop near the South Gate if you go with No.16 bus. However, the buses and bus route may be changed sometimes. So taxies and private car services are more recommended.

Warm Tips of Lijiang Old Town

• Lijiang Old Town has altogether four gates and you can pay a visit from any one of them. Normally, tourists prefer to get inside from the West Gate with two iconic big water wheels, which is closer to other attractions like Black Dragon Pool, Shuhe Ancient Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, etc.
• All the public buses and private cars are forbidden to travel inside the town. If you are going to stay at Lijiang Old Town at night, you’re required to walk from the gate to your booked hotel with your luggage. Choose a closest gate to your hotel, and then you can avoid detours.
