The First Impression of Saint Sophia Cathedral

Saint Sophia Cathedral or St Sophia Cathedral, located in the Sophia Square of Harbin, is the largest Eastern Orthodox church in the far east with more than 112 year’s history. It is also the most finely protected Byzantine architecture in China. Although it is no longer served as a church but Harbin Architecture Art Gallery, it still attracts many visitors with its beautiful exotic architecture.

While the main dome and bell tower are the traditional "green onion head" tent roofs of Russia, and the walls are all made of red bricks, Saint Sophia Cathedral is a highly unusual looking building to non-Russians. The 53.3-metre-high cathedral covers an area of 721 square meters and is the perfect example of Neo-Byzantine architecture. Under the bright sun, the church and the square look like Moscow’s Red Square. The view of St. Sophia Cathedral during the day and at night are two different kinds of beauty. As night falls and lights begin to shine, St. Sophia's Church appears to be covered with a mysterious veil, presenting a fantastic picture.

Saint Sophia Cathedral History

Saint Sophia Cathedral was firstly built in 1907 after the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1903, which connected Vladivostok to northeast China. The Russian 4th Infantry Division arrived in this region just after Russia's loss to the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War (1904~1905). St. Sophia Cathedral was then built and completed of timber in March, 1907 as part of a plan to improve the morale of the army by building an imposing spiritual symbol.

Then, the Russian rebuilt it using masonry and timber four years later. The onset of a second reconstruction by Russian was marked on September 27th, 1923, and a ceremony was held to celebrate laying the corner stone. It was completed on November 25th, 1932, after nine years, and was hailed as a monumental work of art.

In November, 1996, it was listed as one of the Key Cultural Relics under State Protection. In the next year, it was repaired and renamed as Harbin Architecture Art Gallery by the Harbin City government. Locals and tourists still prefer to call it "Sophia Cathedral". It is a respectable landmark for Harbiners and for tourism.

In 2016, Harbin’s Orthodox Cathedral of St Sophia has been included in the first edition of the 20th century Chinese architectural heritage list along with 97 other sites. Experts say that the reason for this list is that these monuments witnessed Chinese history in the 20th century, representing the historical context of China’s social development and architecture in the last century.
