When is the Best Time to Visit Fanjingshan?

Fanjing Mountain belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone, but is affected significantly by southeast marine monsoon in summer. The mountain area has an annual average temperature at around 13.1-14.7℃, with the highest average temperature of 25.3℃ in July, and lowest of 2℃ in February. Temperature declined gradually according to the rising of the altitude of the mountain. But in general, it is not too hot in summer or too cold in winter there. Fanjing Mountain has plenty of rains around the year, and it rains relatively more during May to October. Visitors can go to Fanjing Mountain all years round, but Spring and Autumn are the best traveling seasons with more comfortable weather and seasonal flowers and leaves. If you are fond of the sea of clouds of Fanjingshan, you can visit during May to July and September to November, it usually appear after rain.

In Spring (March to May)

Temperature gradually climbs up to make your warm. And in April and May, azaleas bloom fabulously around Fanjing Mountain to dress it highly beautiful. And also, the dove trees are in blooming season with many lovely white flowers to let you love it.

In Summer (June to August)

It is not very hot in Summer at Fanjing Mountain. Since peaks above 1600 meters are covered by emerald and verdant plantations and trees to build a natural summer heat resort. Rains concentrate mainly during May to August, with some brief thunderstorms.

In Autumn (September to November)

Fanjing Mountain changes into a wonderful colorful world in the fall, as the large spread of plantations wear in red, yellow, purple and green to please your eyes to the most.

In Winter (December to February)

It usually snows in winter time in Fanjingshan, and the coldest months are January to February. The mountain area looks more charming and holy with pure white snow covered on the forest foot and stone peaks. However, as less people visit Fanjing Mountain in winter, it is a great time to escape from crowds to enjoy the peaceful view in a more comfortable and peaceful pace.

How to Get to Fanjingshan?

Fanjingshan National Nature Preserve sits in middle Tongren City in Guizhou Province in southwestern China. To get to the tourist area from other countries or other domestic cities, you need to fly to Tongren Fenghuang Airport or take a train to Tongren train station first and transfer by local taxi, coaches, or buses.

From Tongren to Fanjingshan

From other far away cities, you need to arrive first to Tongren City that manages Fangjingshan Area.

Flights to Tongren

Tongren Fenghuang Airport serves only domestic flights with about 30 major cities including Beijing (2.5h), Shanghai (2.5h), Guiyang (1h), Guilin (1h), Kunming (2h), Hangzhou (2.5h), Guangzhou (1.5h), Shenzhen (1.5h), Xiamen (2h), etc. Fenghuang Airport is about 53km from Fangjingshan and usually needs about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car. Besides, some direct buses are available from the airport to Fanjingshan every day.

Trains to Tongren

Tongren South Railway Station offers bullet train services to and from Guiyang (2h), Chengdu (5h), Chongqing (4h), Guangzhou (6h), Kaili (1h), Changsha (3.5h), Shanghai, etc. So, you can take a bullet train from the above destinations to Tongren and transfer to Fangjingshan. Tongren South Railway Station is about 66 km to Fanjingshan and usually takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes by car. Direct coaches are also available there.

Coaches to Tongren

Provincial cities Guiyang, Kaili, Duyun, Zunyi, etc. launch many daily coaches to Tongren. Moreover, other destinations including Changsha, Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang also serve distance coaches to Tongren City every day!

From Guiyang to Fangjingshan

Guiyang and Fanjingshan is about 248km away, and if you go by car, it will take you about 4 hours. Besides taking the direct buses, you can transfer to Tongren first. There is only 1 direct flight from Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport to Tongren, which needs about 1 hour. And there are about 4 daily high speed G trains operating from Guiyang North Railway Station to Tongren Railway Station, with most depart in the afternoon hours, and the whole riding needs about 1.5-2 hours.

From Guilin to Fangjingshan

Many people visit Fanjingshan from Guilin. The two destinations are about 324km away and usually take about 6.5 hours to go by car. However, there is no direct public transportation, and most people transfer via Tongren City. Guilin Liangjiang International Airport usually offers only 1 direct flight to Tongren, however, which is available mostly every other day at early evening and needs about 50 minutes. There is not direct train between Guilin and Tongren, and you need to transfer to other nearby cities, such as Guiyang. There are about 50 daily bullet trains between from morning till night, which usually take about 2-3 hours.

What to See at Fanjingshan?

Red Clouds Golden Summit

It is the symbol of Fanjing Mountain. Rising about 100 meters from the mountain bed, this summit is 2336 meters above sea level and is the most precipitous among all the three summits at Fanjingshan. As sea of clouds often occurs there, visitors can feel standing in the air on the peak with the especially wonderful scenery in front of their eyes.

Mushroom Stone

Named based on its appearance like a mushroom with larger upper part and smaller lower part. The total stone is approximately 10 meters high and stands out among the surrounding peculiar stones for the last 10 billion years. As the excellent creation of nature, it is favored by lots of painters and photographers.

Old Golden Summit

Rising about 2493 above the sea, the Old Golden Summit is the second highest peak of Fanjingshan. Being one of the top best viewing deck there, it gives shows you the charming and grand landscape of the stone forest with various strange shapes and styles near and far. Chengen Temple

It is the major temple cluster at Fanjingshan with about 10 temple halls with red walls and dark tiles enshrining Buddha. The temple was originally built from Ming Dynasty, and later rebuilt under the emperor’s order to be one of the four royal temples at Fanjingshan.

Wanbao Rock

Wanbao Rock is the geological chronicles of Fanjingshan. It keeps the best evidence to say there was actually ocean at Fanjingshan 1.4 million years ago, and Wanbao Rock iwas elevated from the seafloor. The cobbles, shells, paleontological fossils, etc. with glorious luster under sunshine found there verify what experts guess.

How Many Days to Stay in Fanjingshan?

Mount Fanjing is not very large. To explore the whole mountain, most people spend 1 full day in the scenic area. Hotel prices in this area are usually higher than those of same level in Jiangkou and Tongren city. Jiangkou County is about 30-40 minutes’ driving distance to the entrance of Fanjingshan. Visitors arrive there by coach late can stay in the county because Jiangkou Coach Station is very close to the center of the county. It provides more accommodation with better facilities than the area at the foot of Fanjingshan. Tongren City

If you want better accommodating experience, you can also consider staying in Tongren City and transfer to Fanjingshan on the early morning on your visiting day. From the downtown, it usually takes about 50-70 minutes to Fanjingshan by car, so if you stay in the city, you need to get up very early and set off before 07:30 and even 07:00. Useful Tips for Fanjingshan Travel

A lot of Steps to Walk: Fanjingshan has thousands of steps around the mountain and even some very precipitous way up to the peak, you are advised to travel there based on your physical condition. Particularly, the steps up to the Red Clouds Golden Summit is really narrow and challenging, so people suffering from acrophobia or do not have good body condition are not suggested to climb up to the summit.

What to Wear: weather is quite changeable at Fanjingshan, you are advised to prepare long sleeves no matter when your visit there. For spring and autumn travel, wear thick coat. For summer, prepare light coat and rain coat for strong wind on the peak. During winter, wear quick-dry clothes and outdoor jacket with some fleece to keep warm. Comfortable shoes for mountaineering are suggested for anytime for the lots of steps to walk. Hat, sunglasses and sun cream are better to bring in sunny days, especially in summer.

Photography: the mysterious Sea of Clouds can usually be seen after rain during May to July and September to November. You can prepare your photography equipment to go up to the Old Golden Summit or Red Clouds Golden Summit to catch the beautiful scene. Light of Buddha shows some times in July and August in summer. To take photos of Fanjingshan snow, you can visit during its coldest months of January and February, when it snows more often. But remember to walk carefully for your safety.
