Danxia, firstly appeared in an ancient Chinese poem, to describe the splendid and bright scenery. Later, the term was used by geologists to define a kind of the beautiful scenery of Danxia Mountain. The main feature of Danxia landform is its color. The rocks forming Danxia landscape are all reddish sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic period, about 2 million years ago, which have formed peaks and colored rocks through weathering and crustal movement.

Zhangye Danxia landform is one of the most representative Danxia Landforms in China. Now the main sites opening to the public are Zhangye National Geopark and Binggou Danxia Geopark.

Zhangye National Geopark stretches over two counties, each of which has its entrance to the scenic area, namely Linze County entrance (West entrance) and Sunan County entrance (east entrance). The west entrance is about 40km away from Zhangye City Center (Dafo Temple), about 1 hour by car, and the east entrance is about 33km away from Zhangye City Center, about 50 minutes by car. There are 6 viewing platforms, including 4 in Linze County and 2 in Sunan County. The Danxia landform of Zhangye National Geopark is famous for its richness in color. It is recommended to spend at least 2 hours to visit.

Binggou Danxia Geopark Map

20km away from Zhangye National Geopark, another beautiful Danxia Geopark, Binggou Danxia Geopark is located in Sunan County. Compared with the former one, there are fewer tourists here, and the Danxia landform is more primitive. If Zhangye National Geopark attracts tourists by its beautiful color. The Danxia landform here is richer in shape, such as rocks like camels, castles, torches, etc. As Binggou Danxia Geopark is still under development and public transportation is not very convenient, it is recommended to charter a licensed private car.

How to Plan Your Zhangye Tour

In one or two days, you can visit the main scenic spots in Zhangye, including Zhangye Danxia Geological Park, Binggou Danxia Park, Pingshan Grand Canyon, Mati Temple, and Dafo Temple. If you have more time, we also suggest you follow the steps of Marco Polo along the Silk Road to visit various other cities, such as Jiayuguan, Xining, Xi'an, Dunhuang, etc.

Since the main scenic spots in Zhangye are outside the city downtown, public transportation is not very convenient, so it is recommended that you make transportation plans before your travel.
