Travel with Samantha: 2 Days Enjoyable Trip in Mount Siguniang

With unbeatable alpine snow-caped mountains, grasslands, meadows, valleys, lakes and a strong taste of Tibet with less red tape, western Sichuan has gradually become a big hit for both landscape and culture exploring. The mysterious and beautiful western Sichuan has always been on my travel bucket list and finally made it happen on my trip to Mount Siguniang in 2022. I spent short but memorable two days there, and now I would like to share this wonderful trip with you.

8 Day Diverse Sichuan Exploration Tour

Day 1: An Exciting Journey from Chengdu to Mt. Siguniang

Mount Siguniang, is located in Xiaojin County, Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, western Sichuan Province, which is known for the breathtaking natural scenery and abundant species that are similar to those in the "Alps" in Europe. So it awarded the fame of "Oriental Alps", "A Sacred Mountain in the East" and “World Natural Heritage of Habitat of Giant Panda in Sichuan”. Mount Siguniang usually refers to the large national park with three valleys, like Shuangqiao Valley (双桥沟), Changping Valley (长坪沟), Haizi Valley (海子沟) and one mountain - Four Girls Mountain.

During the Labor Day in May, 2022, my boyfriend and I, along with two other friends, decided on a whim to take a self-drive trip to western Sichuan and chose the closer route of Mount Siguniang National Park, which only took 2 days round trip from Chengdu. As the Labor Day was particularly crowded with tourists, we delayed our departure until almost close to noon and there were many people who would choose to rush in the early hours of the morning to avoid congestion. Therefore, if you plan to travel to China, you should avoid traveling during Chinese public holidays.

Crowded Traffic on the way to Mount Siguniang

Even though we departed in warmer May, the temperature in Mount Siguniang can still be quite a bit cooler. The farther we drove, the lower the temperature dropped and even snowed. As a gift, we could see the snow-covered scenes along the way. The annual average temperature in Mount Siguniang is usually a little low, with about 6°C and the four mountain peaks are covered with ice and snow all the year round. I would definitely recommend that as long as it's not a hot summer day, bring a down jacket, and you'll always need something to wear!

Cold Weather in May at Mount Siguniang

Mount Siguniang National Park usually needs at least two days to explore, therefore tourists need to spend at least one night there. But there is no hotels or hostels inside Mount Siguniang Scenic Area. So we chose the nearby Xiaojin County to stay. After driving half a day, we finally arrived at Xiaojin County in the evening, but since the holiday season, many hotels are full. We made many effort and finally found a nice hotel to have a good rest for the coming next day.

Day 2: A Short Relaxing Getaway from the City and Get Close to the Nature

After a good rest, we set off early for Shuangqiao Valley. Shuangqiao Valley is the largest, longest and easiest-to-explore valley of the three famous valleys of Mount Siguniang National Park. Also, it's the most beautiful valley of the three, offering breathtaking landscape of three forest belts’ scene. This scenic area is divided into three parts - the first part is from Yangliu Bridge to Fiver-color Mountain, the second part is from Sea Buckthorn Forest to Fishing Bay and the third part is from Fishing Bay to Larch Forest. It will be a fantastic way to hop on and off the sightseeing bus to see the scenery and hike some parts to explore more. We took a sightseeing bus all the way up and the scenery gradually changed from green meadows to rolling snowy mountains, not just at the top, but everywhere around us! It was very healing to see the snow-capped mountain peaks, away from the city! As a southerner, this was also the first time I had ever seen so much snow! I do really had a great time in here playing in the snow and having snowball fights with my friends.

4 Days Mount Siguniang Classic Hiking Tour

Among the three valleys in Mount Siguniang National Park, Shuangqiao Valley has the maturest facilities inside that the sightseeing buses provide the service between the entrance to the end of the valley. Furthermore, Shuangqiao Valley is also the most relaxing valley with sightseeing buses through the 34.8 km trip and usually stops at the 5 fixed points for visitors’ sightseeing and photography along the wood plank path. On our tour way with sightseeing buses, we could get off at the stops we thought were pretty and taken photos with my friends. With the majestic Four Girls Mountain, which include the Dafeng Peak (大姑娘峰, the Elder Peak), Erfeng Peak (二姑娘峰, the Second Peak), Sanfeng Peak (三姑娘峰, the Third Peak) and Yaomei Peak (幺妹峰, the Fourth Peak) at our backs, beautiful lakes and meadows in front of us, and a group of like-minded friends, it was a complete relief from the exhaustion of travelling and the hustle and bustle of being in the city.

If you are in Chengdu and want to escape the city for a short time, I highly recommended you to go to Mount Siguniang in western Sichuan. The scenery is unique throughout the year, and I'm going to go there again in the future summer, because it's a wonderful place I can't get enough of!
