Which Way to Choose - Flight or Bullet Train?

Option 1: Direct Flight from Shanghai to Xiamen - Most Recommended
Flying is the quickest and most convenient way to travel from Shanghai to Xiamen. Both Hongqiao and Pudong International Airports operate frequent nonstop flights to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, with departures available throughout the day. The flight takes just about 2 hours, making it a great option for travelers looking to save time. Choose a departure time that fits your plans, and you’ll be in Xiamen before you know it. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (上海浦东国际机场, IATA: PVG)

As one of the largest international airports in China, Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located in the east of Shanghai, about 35 km to the Bund, 30min to Shanghai Disney Resort by car. You can take Metro Line 2 and stop at Lujiazui, Nanjing Road, Zhongshan Park, etc, or easily grab a cab heading downtown. Also, the fastest train in China, Shanghai Maglev Train is here connecting Pudong Airport to the downtown area with the highest speed over 430 km/h. Different bus lines serve day and night and spread over the city and each bus departs within every half an hour with some shuttle buses running between Pudong airport and Hongqiao airport.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (上海虹桥国际机场, IATA: SHA)

Located in the west of Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is near the downtown of Hongqiao in Changning District. By comparison with Pudong international airport, it mainly serves domestic and regional flights. It is quite convenient since the Metro station right inside the airport helps passengers save a lot of time and the airport is very close to the city center, only 13 km to the Bund, about 50 minutes (via Metro line 10) to reach the ancient Yuyuan Garden and the neighboring urbanized buildings such as Shanghai World Financial Center.

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (厦门高崎国际机场, IATA: XMN)

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is the main airport serving Xiamen and one of the busiest in Fujian Province. It’s located on Xiamen Island, about 16 kilometers from the city center around Zhongshan Road, which takes roughly 20 minutes by car. Gulangyu Island, a popular tourist spot, is around 18 kilometers away and can be reached in about 1.5 hours by airport shuttle and ferry. While there’s no metro station at the airport, travelers can take airport buses or the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system for convenient access to the city.
Option 2: High-Speed Train from Shanghai to Xiamen - A Popular Choice
High-speed rail is another great option for traveling between Shanghai and Xiamen. Most trains depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station or occasionally from Shanghai South Station, while Songjiang Station is generally less convenient due to its suburban location. The journey usually ends at Xiamen North Station, which is well connected to the city. With frequent departures throughout the day, bullet trains offer flexibility, comfort, and a smooth ride—ideal for those who prefer watching the scenery or getting a bit of work done along the way.

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (Pinyin: Shanghai Hongqiao Zhan 上海虹桥站)

Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station serves as Shanghai's premier high-speed rail terminal, conveniently integrated with Hongqiao International Airport to form one of East Asia's largest transportation hubs. It's about 20 km to the Bund, Shanghai Museum and Yuyuan Garen (about 45 minutes’ drive). The station is served by metro line 2, line 10 and line 17, which can easily take you to the city center and Zhujiajiao Water Town.

Shanghai South Railway Station (Pinyin: Shanghai Nan Zhan 上海南站)

Shanghai South Railway Station efficiently handles significant passenger traffic to southern destinations. It's about 15 km to the Bund, Shanghai Museum and Yuyuan Garden (about 45 minutes’ drive). The Station runs both normal trains and high speed trains to many destinations, mainly the southern ones such as Hangzhou, Ningbo, Xiamen, etc. It's served by metro line 1, line 3 and line 15, offering convenient access to the nearby attractions.
Xiamen North Railway Station (Pinyin: Xiamen Bei Zhan 厦门北站)

Xiamen North Railway Station is the city’s main high-speed rail hub, located about 18 km from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. The station is well-equipped with various transport links, including metro lines 1 and 4, BRT lines, and multiple bus routes, tourist shuttles, and taxis—making onward travel into the city both convenient and flexible.

Xiamen Railway Station (Pinyin: Xiamen Zhan 厦门站)

Xiamen Railway Station sits closer to the heart of the city, making it a convenient choice for travelers heading to popular attractions like Gulangyu Island, Nanputuo Temple, and Xiamen Botanical Garden. Located about 12 kilometers from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, it can be reached in around 20 minutes by taxi or airport shuttle. The station is served by metro line 3, offering easy access to nearby tourist areas and central districts.
