There are two famous mountains located in Anhui Province, about 400 kilometers away from Shanghai. One is Mount Huang, called the “the No.1 Mountain in China”, listed as UNESCO World Heritage which are well known for “Five Wonders” - Odd-shaped Pines, Spectacular Rocky Peaks, Sea of Clouds, Hot Spring and Winter Snow. The other one is Mount Jiuhua, one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China dedicated to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

This 6-day tour is specially designed for travelers who are interested in Chinese Buddhism culture as well as natural mountain scenery. You will experience the contrast between modernity and ancient/tradition, and learn from both nature and culture!

Ni Hao! Welcome to Shanghai, the biggest metropolis of China!

Upon arrival, you will be met by local tour guide at the arrival hall of the airport and escorted to check in your hotel in downtown by a private comfortable vehicle. The rest of today is on your own to relax. If you want to explore nearby, feel free to get some practical suggestions from your tour guide.

Optional Evening Activity - Enjoy an entertaining and breathtaking Acrobatic Show at Shanghai Circus World or other acrobatic theatres.

Day 2 Shanghai (B, L)

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel to start your Shanghai exploration. The first stop is to visit Shanghai Museum, one of the Best Four Museums in China. This modern museum, with a round top and a square base which symbolizing the ancient Chinese perception of the world as "round sky, square earth", has collected many international-standard exhibits of bronzes, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics, jade from more than 5,000 years ago to the Qing dynasty. It is an ideal place to learn about the profound Chinese history and culture.

Then, take an interesting visit to Yu Garden, a shining star among all dotted ancient Chinese gardens in Jiangnan which fully embodies the traditional design of architecture. Jagged pavilion with elegant decoration, glittering pools with roving fish, sprouting pine trees, all these pleasant scenes refresh both your eyes and mood. Adjacent to the garden is the Yuyuan Bazaar where you can savor tasteful local snacks or bargain at some elaborate traditional Chinese handicrafts and art works as souvenirs.

After lunch, drive a few kilometers to Lujiazui Area of Pudong New District to visit visit “the eye of Shanghai” - Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) where you can have a panoramic view of the whole Shanghai and Huangpu River area. Ascend yourselves to 474 meters on the 100th floor to experience sky walk on the transparent glass-walled walkway and feel Shanghai lying under your feet and blue sky hanging above your head.

Later, move to another popular landmark of Shanghai - Nanjing Road which is shopping paradise as well as a great place to take a wonderful walk to experience the local modern atmosphere. Lastly, you will stop at the Bund. Originally the towpath for transporting, the Bund transformed into a feverish trading district during European concession period. Stroll along the Bund, feel the perfect fusion of Chinese culture and Western culture, and seize the stunning Shanghai skyline with your own eyes.

Optional Evening Activity - Take a relaxing Huangpu River night cruise to see the city’s most significant edifices and streets sparkling under the atmospheric cover of darkness (about 50 minutes).

Day 3 Shanghai & High Speed Train to Mount Jiuhua (B)

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up and escorted to the railway station to catch a G train to Chizhou City in Anhui Province. Chizhou is 430 km west from Shanghai, taking about 3 hours and 40 minutes by high speed train.

Upon arrival, be met by the local guide and driver at Chizhou Railway Station and driven about 40 km directly to Mount Jiuhua. Check in your hotel in Mount Jiuhua and take a short rest. In this afternoon, you’ll have a half-day Buddhism exploration.

Mount Jiuhua, also called Jiuhuashan, is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China, together with Mount Wutai in Shanxi, Mount Putuo in Zhejiang and Mount Emei in Sichuan. Mount Jiuhua is dedicated to Ksitigarbha (Chinese Pinyin: Dizang), a bodhisattva and protector of beings in hell realms according to Mahayana Buddhist tradition. This holy land with over 1600 years is listed as “National AAAAA Tourist Attraction” and reputed as “Buddhist Heaven for Lotus Flowers”.

Firstly, you’ll take cable car up to Longevity Palace, where preserves a saint Buddhist Mummy of monk Wu Xia in the Hall of Sacred Remains, and visit Hall of Five Hundred Arhats with 500 bronze statues, and this splendid site can be seen only in this Buddhist Mountain. Reach the viewing deck of Longevity Palace to have grand, holy and mysterious view of the undulating mountains in the shape of a natural Sleeping Buddha. Later, take cable car down to Jiuhua Street and continue to visit the Incarnation Grand Hall, the burying place for Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva - Kim Qiaojue. Be followed a visit to Zhiyuan Temple to see the holy Buddhas and appreciate the precious Tripitaka, the only Tripitaka in Chinese engraved by the official in Qing Dynasty and Huacheng Temple, the oldest and leading temple of Mount Jiuhua.

Day 4 Mount Jiuhua & Drive to Huangshan (B)

After breakfast, you’ll begin today’s visit to fully explore Mount Jiuhua. First, take cableway up to Tiantai (Heavenly Terrace) Scenic Area at altitude of 1306 meters. A saying goes “You never reach Mount Jiuhua without a visit to Heavenly Terrace Peak”. Get up at the top of Heavenly Terrace Peak and catch a panoramic view of Mount Jiuhua with many peaks to see, including the highest peak - Shiwang Peak at 1342 meters. Walk to the highest temple of Jiuhuashan - Tiantai Temple to visit the Hall of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Hall of Thousands of Buddha. After absorbing the strong Buddhist culture and breathtaking scenery, get down to visit Ancient Lecture where Kim Ksitigarbha chanted Avatamsaka Sutra. Transfer to visit the 7.68-meter-tall Phoenix Old Pine which looks like the flying phoenix spreading its wings.

After the tour, be driven about 130 kilometers to Tangkou Town located at the foot of Mount Huang Scenic Area (around 2~2.5 hours). Stay overnight in Tangkou Town.

After breakfast, your guide will escort you to take park bus from the Tangkou Town to Yungu Temple to take a cableway to upper beautiful sightseeing area of Huangshan Mountain – North Sea Scenic Area which is famous for marvelous precipitous peaks, beautiful giant pine trees and far-reaching vision. Walk to lofty Begin-to-Believe Peak (1668m) to stretch your eyesight over cloud seas to far distance, and then hike about 40 minutes to Dispelling Cloud Pavilion to look down the Dreamland - West Sea Grand Canyon. Walk down along the stone steps to the bottom of the canyon while enjoying the Avatar-like rising rock peaks, unfathomable cliffs, bizarre stones and tenacious pine trees. 

Generally speaking, it takes about 3 hours for energetic hiker to hike from the Dispelling Cloud Pavilion, via 1st Ring and 2nd Ring to the bottom and return to the starting point. For beginners, children, and senior travelers, you can decide the hiking length on your own according to your, usually 2 hours for the 1st Ring and 2.5hrs for the 2nd Ring. In the bottom of the canyon, there is also a monorail cable trains for those who don’t want to return by walking to transfer back to the peak area. 

If time and energy allow, you can spend about one hour to explore the Sky Sea Scenic Area where you can enjoy the sunset from the second highest peak - Bright Summit (1840m), visit the incredible Flying-over Rock, then return back your hotel and have a good rest.

Day 6 Mount Huang & Huangshan Departure (B)

Get up early (usually around 5am to 6am) to enjoy the magnificent sunrise from Huangshan. We suggest you watch the sunrise from the Refreshing Terrance which is only a few minutes’ walking from Beihai Hotel. In good-weather days, you can see clearly the golden light of the sun piercing the mists, and rocky peaks rising above the frothy, ever-changing sea of white clouds. After the sunrise, get back to your hotel for breakfast.

Continue on your wonderful sightseeing on the Yellow Mountain to see the famous Dawn Pavilion, Stone Monkey Watching the Sea on the Lion Peak (1690m). Then walk along the wood path to the cable station to take a cable car to exit the mountain. Your driver is ready at the mountain foot to transfer you back to Huangshan City for lunch.

After lunch, go for a relaxing stroll on the 900-year-old Tunxi Ancient Street to appreciate authentic old Huizhou-style architectures. Next comes an interesting visit to Hu Kaiwen Ink-stick Factory to find out how ancient Chinese people produce ink sticks (major item used to write and paint in ancient time).
