Hong Kong covers a land area of over 1,106 square kilometers and a sea area of over 1,648 square kilometers. This world-renewed metropolis is made up of 3 parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. There are altogether 18 districts on those parts, they are:

Hong Kong Island: Central & Western District (中西区), Eastern District (东区), Southern District (南区), Wan Chai District (湾仔区)

Hong Kong Tourist Areas in Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong Island is the second largest island (just behind Lantau Island) and the earliest area opened to the world in Hong Kong. This area lies in the south of Hong Kong and consists of 4 parts:

 

Central & Western District - City Center of Hong Kong

Central & Western District in the northwest part of the Hong Kong Island is the business and administration center of whole Hong Kong City. When thinking about Hong Kong, the picture that comes to your mind first must be the stretching skyscrapers in central and western district. Apart from those never-ending modern skyscrapers, this area also features raucous taverns, swanky nightclubs, hyper-luxury hotels and trendy restaurants. There are countless shopping malls and streets that can tell you the prosperity and bustle of Hong Kong, CBD, SOHO, Pacific Place, and Landmark Plaza… To enjoy the stunning city view of Hong Kong, you can ride the Peak Tram to the top of Victoria Peak or take the pleasant Star Ferry at Central Ferry Pier from this area to Kowloon, which are the best and should not be missed ways.

If you want to travel to Guangzhou or Macau for an extending tour, catching a ferry at Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in this area is also a good idea.

Eastern District

As its name implies, Eastern District is located in eastern part of Hong Kong Island. This area is not that famous than other areas of Hong Kong. However, if you are a Hong Kong Film enthusiast, pay a visit to Hong Kong Film Archive must be a good idea.

Southern District

◇ Highlights: Hong Kong Ocean Park, Stanley, Repulse Bay Beach, etc.
◇ Driving Distance to Hong Kong International Airport: About 51km / 32mi (about 1 hour by car)

Southern District is the largest part of Hong Kong Island, covering more than half of the land in Hong Kong Island. Either for Hong Kong residents and tourists, this area is the best place to get away from the bustle and hustle of Hong Kong city. There are many beaches, parks and meekest where you can relax yourself, such as Waterfall Bay Park, Repulse Bay Beach, Stanley Market, etc. If you travel with kids, you are highly suggested to visit Hong Kong Ocean Park and create happy memories there. Wan Chai District

Wan Chai District bordering Central & Western District in the east is home to some of the best convention centers in Hong Kong. Just south of Wan Chai sits the Happy Valley, one of the most famous horse-racing tracks on the planet. Besides, if you are going to visit Hong Kong on July 1st (Handover Anniversary) or October 1st (National Day of China), you’ll enjoy an ornate flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai.

From the Wan Chai Ferry Pier near Golden Bauhinia Square in this area, you can get to Kowloon in the opposite by Star Ferry. There are two routes for you to choose, one is from Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier, and the other is to Hung Kom Pier.

Hong Kong Tourist Areas in Kowloon

Kowloon is located in about the heart area on a Hong Kong map, facing Hong Kong Island on the opposite side of Victoria Harbour. The buildings, restaurants, hotels in this area are not that luxury than those in Hong Kong Island, but more traditional. There are many shopping streets and delicious street foods waiting for your explore. It consists of 4 districts, they are:

Kowloon City District

Kowloon City District is on the central of Kowloon, neighboring Wong Tai sin District in the northeast and Yan Tsim Mong District in the southeast. From Hung Hom Station there, you can take Through Trains to Guangzhou.

Wong Tai Sin District

You are not really suggested to find a hotel in this district, but it is a good place for sightseeing.

Hong Kong Tourist Areas in New Territories

The New Territories is the largest part of Hong Kong, covering a land area of about 975.1 square kilometers. It borders Shenzhen in its north and stretches to Lantau Island in the west and other outlying islands in the south. If you are going to arrive at Hong Kong by flight or getting from Shenzhen to Hong Kong by Metro, this area is usually the first stop of your Hong Kong tour.

Hong Kong International Airport, the only airport in Hong Kong for tourists, settles in the northwestern part of Lantau. Aside from the airport, the longest bi-cable ropeway in Asia - Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car, along with The Big Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha) and Po Lin Monastery are hot landmarks attracting tourist visiting Lantau.

Tourist Tip: If possible, you are suggested to avoid the weekends and holidays to experience the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car. As one of the most visited attractions in Hong Kong, it usually needs to wait after a long waiting line for a ticket at that time.
