This well-preserved complex includes his family’s traditional courtyards, the Sanwei Study where he studied, the Baicao Garden where he played as a child and a memorial hall. The site offers a glimpse into the life and inspirations of the writer who shaped modern Chinese literature.

Lu Xun’s Former Residence: The former residence was built during the Jiaqing years of the Qing Dynasty (1796–1820). It consists of a gatehouse, a main hall, side rooms, and miscellaneous rooms. This is where Lu Xun spent his childhood and youth. The “早 (early)” character carved on the desk in the home serves as an inspiring reminder for future generations to study diligently.
Baicao Garden: The Baicao Garden was Lu Xun’s childhood paradise. Although it is called a "garden," it was actually a vegetable field. The green vegetable plots, smooth well parapets, tall soapberry trees, and purple-red mulberries mentioned in Lu Xun’s writings can all be found here. Lu Xun spent many happy childhood moments here.
Sanwei Study: Sanwei Study was an old-style tutorial school of fame in the City of Shaoxing proper at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Shou Huaijian (1849-1930), who styled himself Jingwu, was an erudite scholar of integrity and simplicity. It was here that Lu Xun, a diligent and reflective learner between his ages of 12 and 17 years, was well educated in the field of basic Chinese literature. In the center of the Study stand the tutor’s desk and chair, on either side of which are seats for guests, and the ones under the windows are for student use.

The site not only offers a glimpse into the life and inspirations of the writer who shaped modern Chinese literature, but also the best-preserved historical block in the urban area of Shaoxing, with the richest cultural connotations and the classic appearance of a water town, making it a must-visit for travelers.

Bazi Bridge (八字桥) is an outstanding representative of ancient Chinese bridge architecture and is hailed as “China’s earliest overpass.” Located at the east end of Baziqiao Street in Yuecheng District of Shaoxing City, it was originally built during the Jiating years of the Southern Song Dynasty (1201–1204) and was reconstructed in the fourth year of the Baoyou era (1256). With a history spanning over eight centuries, the Bazi Bridge is a heritage site associated with the Grand Canal in Shaoxing and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This stone beam bridge is situated at the junction of three rivers, comprising a main bridge and auxiliary bridges, along with four sets of steps. Its innovative design features four-way slopes intersecting three streets and three rivers. The eastern side of the bridge has slopes facing south and north, forming a shape similar to the Chinese character “八” (eight), while the western side has slopes facing west and south, also forming a similar shape. This unique structure effectively functions as one of the earliest “cloverleaf interchanges” in ancient times, addressing complex transportation challenges on both water and land. It serves not only as a symbol of Shaoxing’s rich historical and cultural heritage but also as a vital physical reference for studying Song Dynasty bridge construction techniques and the broader history of Chinese bridges.

In addition, travelers can enjoy a 20-minute Wupeng boat ride (CNY/90 per boat, round trip, only for your reference) through the narrow waterways, taking in the picturesque views of ancient bridges and traditional architecture. This experience offers a glimpse into the “slow life” of Shaoxing, where locals enjoy a leisurely pace along the waterways.

Shen Yuan (沈园), also known as Shen Garden or Shen’s Garden, is not only a beautiful historic mansion but also a place where visitors can experience the deep cultural heritage and romantic history of Shaoxing. Built during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), Shen Yuan was originally a private garden owned by a wealthy merchant with the surname Shen. It became famous in the Southern Song Dynasty when Lu You and his ex-wife Tang Wan met here by chance in 1151. Lu You wrote the famous poem The Hairpin Phoenix on the garden wall, expressing his sorrow and longing. This event has made Shen Yuan a symbol of romantic tragedy and enduring love.

The garden is divided into three main areas: the Ancient Relics Area, the East Garden, and the South Garden. The Ancient Relics Area features original relics from the Song Dynasty, including the Hulu Pond and a small hill. The area also includes the Broken Cloud Stone at the entrance, symbolizing the tragic separation of Lu You and Tang Wan; The East Garden, also known as the “Lovers’ Garden,” showcases typical Jiangnan garden features, with pavilions, bridges, and scenic spots like the Asking Plum Pavilion and Phoenix Bridge. The South Garden consists of the Connected Twig Garden and the Lu You Memorial Hall. The memorial hall displays artifacts and information about Lu You’s life and works.

In addition to being a classical garden by day, Shen Garden comes alive at night with the spectacular “Night of Shen’s Garden” Performance (沈园之夜). This immersive experience is centered on the tragic love story of Lu You and Tang Wan. Through a blend of traditional Shaoxing art forms like Yue Opera, Lotus Falling, Shaoxing Opera, and Pinghu Tune, the performance vividly brings to life five key segments: “Visiting the Garden,” “Leaving the Garden,” “Returning to the Garden,” “Composing in the Garden,” and “Cherishing the Garden.” Set against the backdrop of the authentic garden landscape and enhanced by the picturesque water town scenery and interactive screens, the show creates a magical and dreamlike atmosphere.

The phrase “the soul of the Xia and Shang dynasties, the waters of the Spring and Autumn period, the bridges of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties” aptly captures its essence. Anchang is also the hometown of the Shaoxing “Shi Ye 师爷” (Advisers), a place where many notable scholars and officials hailed from. The saying goes, “All the Shaoxing advisers come from Anchang.” As a major commercial hub, Anchang thrived on commerce. In the past, there were more than twenty old-style Chinese private banks, and the trade of sea salt, cotton, soy sauce, and other fermented products, known as the “two whites and one black,” supported the prosperity of the old street.

Anchang also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with one national-level, five provincial, and twenty-six municipal-level intangible cultural heritage projects, including “Shaoxing Xuanjuan” and “Shaoxing Blessing.” For 26 consecutive years, the town has hosted the Lunar December Festival, featuring a variety of wonderful programs such as the intangible cultural heritage market, water weddings, and water town operas, which showcase the profound Yue culture of Anchang and have become one of the most popular festivals in the Shaoxing area.

Orchid Pavilion (兰亭景区) is a famous cultural site located at the foot of Lanting Mountain in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Its history dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period when King Goujian of Yue planted orchids here. The name “Orchid Pavilion” originates from a post house built during the Han Dynasty. However, it gained worldwide fame in 353 AD during the Eastern Jin Dynasty when the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi and 41 other scholars held a poetry and wine gathering here, resulting in the creation of the "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion," known as the “Number One Running Script in the World”. This event, known as “Qu Shui Liu Shang” (floating cups on winding water, “曲水流觞” in Chinese), has made Orchid Pavilion a sacred place for calligraphy.

The Orchid Pavilion Scenic Area features several notable sites, including the Goose Pond, named for the story that Wang Xizhi, a renowned calligrapher, loved observing geese there. The inscription “鹅池” on the stone tablet is attributed to Wang Xizhi and his son Wang Xianzhi. Another highlight is the Qu Shui Liu Shang area, a replica of the ancient gathering where scholars would float their wine cups on the winding stream and compose poetry, an activity that visitors can still experience today.

The scenic area also hosts the annual Lanting Calligraphy Festival, which takes place on the third day of the third lunar month. This event draws calligraphers from around the world to celebrate and participate in calligraphy activities, making it a significant cultural gathering. Visitors can also engage in traditional calligraphy at the “Eighteen Inkstone Ponds” area, where they can try their hand at using ink and brush, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Keyan Scenic Area (柯岩风景区) is located at the foot of Mount Ke and consists of three main parts: Ke Yan (Ke Rock), Jian Hu (Jian Lake), and Lu Zhen (Lu Town). Keyan is the core of the entire scenic area. The scenic area is not far from the city center and is an ideal place to explore Shaoxing’s culture and enjoy a relaxing weekend break.

Keyan Area comprises four major attractions: the Stone Buddha, Mirror Bay, Famous Academics of Zhejiang, and Yuanshan Garden. Among these, the “Tiangong Big Buddha” and the “Cloud Bone” are particularly noteworthy. The “Tiangong Big Buddha,” carved during the Sui Dynasty and completed over three generations of stonemasons, is truly majestic. The “Cloud Bone,” with its broad top and narrow base, resembles an inverted pagoda. Standing over 30 meters tall with a base circumference of only 4 meters, it appears top-heavy but has withstood the elements for over a thousand years, a truly astonishing sight.

Jian Lake, known as Shaoxing’s “mother lake,” features several scenic spots: Flute Pavilion of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Nanyang Autumn Boating, and Gourd Drunken Isle. Visitors can take a Wupeng boat ride on Jian Lake (for an additional fee) and experience the local Shaoxing culture by tasting yellow rice wine and watching the flowing wine ceremony on Gourd Drunken Isle.

Lu Town, a fictional town created by Lu Xun in his writings, has been brought to life as a themed park. Nestled beside Jian Lake, Lu Zhen features shops, inns, cultural exhibitions, and traditional opera stages. Actors portraying characters from Lu Xun’s stories, such as Ah Q and Mistress Xiang Lin, roam the streets, offering a vivid and authentic experience.
