Urumqi International Airport has 99 domestic air lines which connects most provicial cities and some important cities in China, such as Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, etc. There are 17 international airlines. You can fly to Ürümqi from a number of Central Asian cities, including Almaty (Kazakhstan), Bishkek and Osh (Kyrgyzstan), Islamabad (Pakistan, via Kashgar), Novosibirsk (Russia), Moscow, Baku (Azerbaijan) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan).

Travelers can also take flight to other most visited destinations in Xinjiang, such as Kashgar, Kanas, Altay, Turpan, Yining, etc.

Urumqi Train Station

Urumqi Railway Station was called Urumqi Railway Southern Station before which is located at the foot of the Yamarick Mountain in the southeastern Saybagh district in Urumqi. It is the bridgehead of the second Eurasian Continental Bridge. It can hold about 7,000 passengers once. There are advanced facilities such as the building automation system, the information management system and electronic ticketing system, etc. which are helpful for the passengers and also to the security management. The routes from Urumqi to Beijing, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Lanzhou, Chengdu, and the route from Korla to Xi’an have been opened. Also there is international route from Urumqi to Alma Ata. The routes in the area of Xinjiang directs from Urumqi to Korla, Aksu, Ala Shan Kou, Kuitun and Willow Park.

Lanzhou - Xinjiang Railway

Lanzhou - Xinjiang Railway is only railway heading out from Xinjiang to interior China, starting from Lanzhou in Gansu, stopping at Urumqi Railway Station. Xinjiang connects 11 domestic cities, including Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Jinan, Zhouzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xuzhou, Nanjing, Hankou and Lanzhou. And all overland train will meet in Lanzhou and steer to Urumqi in Xinjiang.

All trains provide three kinds of seats – softer sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat. On each railway carriage, there is a bathroom and hot water supply. During meals time, there are dining cars carrying meals, fruit and other food to your seat. You can also go to the dining carriage to have meals which is more convenient and of more choices.

Northen Xinjiang Railway

North Xinjiang Railway is the extending railway of Lanzhou Xinjiang Railway. It connects Urumqi and Alataw Pass. Alataw Pass is the second Asia-Europe continental bridge and out of the gateway to China. Northen Xinjiang Railway is a a great recommended transportation tool when traveling in Northen Xinjiang.

Southern Xinjiang Railway

Southern Xinjiang Railway starts from Turpan, Go through northern side of Taklimakan Desert, via Korla(库尔勒), Aksu(阿克苏) and Kashgar, arrive at Khotan(和田)。Kashgar area is one of the most popular destination in Xinjiang.

To Tashiken Mongolia Border
Are there buses from Urumqi to Tashiken? We plan to travel to Bulgan in Mongolia from there.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your message. I am sorry to tell you there is no bus from Urumqi to Tashiken currently. You can get through Irkeshtam port to Kyrgyzstan from Kashgar, then transfer from Kyrgyzstan to Tashiken. You can also take flight to Tashiken from Urumqi. There are several non-stop flights each week, and several daily flights with stopovers at Alma-Ata or Astana.
