How to Get to/away Macau

Macau Air

Macau International Airport (MFM) is the only airport in Macau. It located in Taipa Island on the northeast of Macau City. Convenient flights have linked Macau with many cities in China's mainland like Shanghai, Beijing, Xiamen, Chengdu, Chongqing and Zhengzhou, and also other international countries and cities like Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, etc. Every 15 to 20 minutes from 11 am to 9 pm, there are free shuttle buses can take you travel from the airport to most of the hotels in Macau directly.

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and Hong Kong Shun Tak Centre (Sheung Wan) also operate helicopters to Macau Outer Harbor Terminal, which takes only about 15 minute. The helicopter ticket charges about HKD 4,300 to HKD 5,900.

Macau is small island-like city. At present, there is no railway station there, so you cannot get to Macau by trains directly. However, due to the close distance between Macau and Zhuhai, you can take trains to Zhuhai Railway Station first and then cross the border at the nearby Gongbei Port to Macau.

At present, most of the cities in China have trains to Zhuhai Railway Station, like Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Guilin, Guiyang, Congjiang (Guizhou), Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, etc.

Ferry is really popular in Macau, especially when you want to travel to/from Macau from Hong Kong and Shenzhen. There are 2 ferry terminals in Macau - Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal and Taipa Ferry Terminal. Both the two terminals have ferries to Hong Kong and Shenzhen every day.

Since the opening of Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge, tourists can take shuttle buses or cross-boundary coaches to Macau from Hong Kong now. There are 24-hour shuttle buses travelling from Hong Kong side of the bridge to Macau side directly. Many places in Hong Kong, like airport and Hong Hom Railway Station, have linking buses to the port at Hong Kong side. You can take those buses or ride a taxi to Hong Kong side first and take the shuttle bus to Macau side. And after arriving at the Macau side, you can take bus 101 X, 102X or ask a taxi to your destination in Macau. If you are in Shenzhen and want to go to Macau by Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge, you are suggested to get to Hong Kong first and then travel from Hong Kong to Macau.

How to Get Around Macau

Macau Taxi

Getting around Macau by taxi is also a good option in this relatively small city. There are two kinds of taxis in Macau, one is in black with a cream roof and another is in yellow. Both the two kinds of taxis follow the same price rule. The meter will start running at MOP19.00 for the first 1600 meters, with MOP2.00 added for every 240 meters thereafter. MOP2.00 is charged for waiting per minute. And there is a MOP3.00 surcharge for each item of luggage carried in the boot.

Making use of Macau free shuttle buses and public bus lines to travel around Macau is also popular in this small city, especially when it comes to the former way. Almost every high-end hotel in Macau has its own free shuttle buses, by which you can get from airport, ports, ferry terminals, casino to your hotel directly. Trips by public lines in Macau are charged for a flat fare of MOP 6.00. You are suggested to prepare adequate money for the fare as no change is given on the buses.

Zhuhai to Macau

Zhuhai is just about 6km north of Macau. As Zhuhai is a city in China's mainland, to travel from Zhuhai to Macau, the Special Administrative Region of China that has its different money, passports and legal system from China's mainland, you need to cross the border at one of the ports in Zhuhai. There are Gongbei Port, Hengqin Port and Wan Chai Port in Zhuhai. For tourists, you are suggested to cross the border at Gongbei Port or Hengqin Port.

Way 1 (top recommended): Cross the border at Gongbei Port of Entry and then change to the free shuttle buses to your hotel in Macau.

Gongbei Port of Entry settles in Zhuhai city downtown area and is only about 0.5km from Zhuhai Railway Station. Zhuhai International Airport also has Airport Express Line to Gongbei Port.

Way 2: Take Airport Express Line to Macau via Hengqin Port.

Airport Express Line has 2 running routs to Macau, one is from the airport to Gongbei Port, and another is from airport to Macau city area via Hengqin Port. Hengqin Port offers service 24 hours a day. If you arrive at Zhuhai Airport after 01:00am, you can take the Airport Express Line to Macau via Hengqin Port. The whole journey takes about 1.5 hours.

Hong Kong to Macau

Hong Kong is across the sea to Macau. The direct distance between the two cities is only about 38km / 23mi. There are 4 regular ways to travel from Hong Kong to Macau, ferry (1 hour around), helicopter (15 minutes), private car (1 hour around) and bus (2 hours around). Some tourists also choose to get to Macau via Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge. Travel from Hong Kong side of the bridge to Macau side needs about 35 minutes.

The direct distance between Macau and Shenzhen is only about 60km. And as both of them are in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA粤港澳大湾区) which is a new development zone of China, the transportation between them is really convenient. Usually, tourists travel from Shenzhen to Macau by ferry, private car, helicopter and bus.

Ferry (about 1 h): You can get to Macau from Shenzhen Shekou Ferry Terminal or Shenzhen Fuyong Ferry Terminal (the ferry terminal in Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport) by ferry. The ferries will arrive at Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal or Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.

High Speed Train (2 hours around): Getting from Shenzhen to Macau by trains directly is not available, because there is no railway station in Macau. However, you can travel from Shenzhen to its nearby Zhuhai by high speed train first and then cross the border at Gongbei Port of Entry to Macau. The trains travel from Shenzhen North Railway Station to Zhuhai Railway Station in about 2 hours. And the Gongbei Port of Entry is only in a walking distance from the Zhuhai Railway Station. Guangzhou to Macau

Guangzhou is about 141km northeast of Macau. Usually, you can ride a bus (from 1.5 hours) or high speed train (about 1-1.5 hours) to Macau. Also, you can travel to Shenzhen or Hong Kong first and then make a transfer to Macau. The best recommended way is taking the high speed train to Zhuhai Railway Station and going through the immigration to Macau from Gongbei Port of Entry, which is next to Zhuhai Railway Station. The whole train journey takes about 1-1.5 hours. Some of the hotels in Guangzhou also have buses to Macau. Those buses will travel to Macau via Hengqin Port.
