Jiankou, in Chinese, refers to arrow nock, and the W-shaped Great Wall is named for its similar figure of an arrow. It is one of the most steep, wild and dangerous sections of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty (1348-1644AD), with serious natural weathering and no artificial renovation since then, and Mutianyu Great Wall is only 10km to the east.

Situated in the northeast of the suburb of Beijing, Badaohe, Bohai County, Huairou District, Beijing (北京市区怀柔县渤海镇八道河乡), Jiankou Great Wall connects Mutianyu Great Wall in the west. It is about 72km to Tiananmen Square, 74km to Badaling Great Wall, 75km to Summer Palace, 72km to the Forbidden City, 30km to Huanghuacheng Great Wall.

There are usually 2 ways to get to Jiankou Great Wall from Beijing downtown.
Option 1: By car - recommended, about 2 hours
Many taxi drivers are not willing to take you to Jiankou , since it is too far. If you want to save the transportation troubles, you can choose the private car service provided by China Discovery. Option 2: By bus - recommended, 2.5-3 hours
There is not any direct tourist bus from Downtown Beijing to Jiankou. You can take a city bus 916 or 916 express (快916) at Dongzhimen Wai Bus Stop (东直门外站), and get off at Huairou North Rd (Pinyin: Huairou Beidajie 怀柔北大街), then transfer to Bus 25 at Yujiayuan (Pinyin: Yujiayuan Yiqu 于家园一区), and finally reach Jiankou Great Wall at West Xishanzi Stop (Pinyin: Xishanzi Xi 西栅子西).
Mutianyu to Jiankou Transportation Map
You are not recommended to hike independently from Mutianyu to Jiankou the safety reasons. Jiankou Great Wall Tourist Map
Stretching over 20km, located to the west of Mutianyu, Jiankou is one of the best representative sections of the wild great wall. It's very steep with watchtowers scattered along the mountain ridges. You are recommended to visit from Xishanzi to the North Tower and hike all the way to the Nine-window Tower, and it is a section where you can encounter most of the ancient towers and bricks in Jiankou section.
