Beijing has 5 railway stations located in different areas. Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing Railway Station and Beijing Railway Station are three most frequently used for passengers transport. They alll operate both high speed bullet trains and normal fast trains. Beijing East Railway Station is a freight station. Beijing Changping North Railway Station only operate several normal fast trains.

How to Choose a Best Railway Station

The Beijing West Railway Station mainly handles trains from Beijing to Xian, Chengdu, Taiyuan, Pingyao Ancient City, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, etc. If you want to visit Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Harbin, Huangshan and other destinations, you should get to Beijing South Railway Station. Beijing Railway Station has trains to most big cities in China. Before boarding your train to/off Beijing, you should figure out your destinations and check train tickets carefully to make sure you board/disembark at the right railway station. You can see the station name on your train ticket which are usually the largest characters printed in bold on the ticket. The English letters below them are their Chinese pronunciations in pinyin, which are not always spell like English words though they look definitely like. For example, Beijing West is spelled as Beijing Xi in pinyin, and Beijing South is spelled as Beijing South.

Beijing Railway Stations Transportation Maps

All railway stations in Beijing are connected by subways, public buses and taxis. You can easily find an avaible transport to downtown area of Beijing (Tian'anmen, Forbidden City, Hutong, Temple of Heaven...). The public transportations tools usually operate from around 6 am to around 11 pm while the taxis usualy run all day and night. If you want to go to the Great Wall, you need to take subways or public buses to Dongzhimen Bus Station first, then take tourist bus to the Great Wall. How to Plan a Beijing Tour

Generally speak, 2 - 4 days are sufficient to explore the best highlights of Beijing. You can visit Tiananmen Square, now the largest city plaza in the world, Forbidden City, one of the world’s five most important palaces, and Summer Palace, the largest and best-preserved royal garden in China on the first day. Then spend another day hiking the famous Mutianyu Great Wall and having a walk at the Sacred Way on your way back to central Beijing. The third day is free for you to have some leisure time at the Temple of Heaven or hop on a rickshaw to experience the typical Beijing Hutongs.

If you have more days, you can go for an in-depth Great Wall hiking or photography tour, and explore more hidden attractions in the city, or even travel a little further to other cities in China such as Xi'an and Shanghai.
