Top Attractions on Beijing Map

As the map shows, most attractions are in central Beijing within the 3rd Ring. Tiananmen Square is at the heart of Beijing. Only 2km to the north lies the Forbidden City. Keep heading north, you will get to Jingshan Park where you can have a panorama view of the Forbidden City. Nanluoguxiang is only about 1.5km to the northeast of Jingshan Park. It is a time-honored Hutong lined with all kinds of stores and traditional mansions. Walking 1km southwards, you will get to Beihai Park, and Prince Gong Mansion is only 600m away from there. Lama Temple, next to Confucius Temple, is in the northeastern corner within the 2nd Ring Road. In the south part of central Beijing, you will find Temple of Heaven is about 20 minutes’ drive away from Tiananmen Square.

Other attractions are a little far from downtown. Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan Park are in the northwest part, about 23km away (50 minutes’ drive) from downtown. 798 Art Zone, the new landmark of Beijing's urban culture, is in northeastern Beijing, about 18km away. The Olympic Park where the Water Cube and Bird’s Nest locate is 13km northwards. And to get to the Great Wall (Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai, Jinshanling, Juyongguan, etc), you need to travel at least 80km from downtown.

How to Plan a Beijing Tour

Generally speak, 2 - 4 days are sufficient to explore the best highlights of Beijing. You can visit Tiananmen Square, now the largest city plaza in the world, Forbidden City, one of the world’s five most important palaces, and Summer Palace, the largest and best-preserved royal garden in China on the first day. Then spend another day hiking the famous Mutianyu Great Wall and having a walk at the Sacred Way on your way back to central Beijing. The third day is free for you to have some leisure time at the Temple of Heaven or hop on a rickshaw to experience the typical Beijing Hutongs.
