Day 2 Beijing (B, L)

After breakfast, start to explore the historical face of Beijing with a brief visit to Tiananmen Square which is now the largest city plaza in the world. Tiananmen Gate on the northern square was the site where the Chairman Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Leave Forbidden City, and drive about 6km to next imperial site – Temple of Heaven. It was originally used to pay homage to Heaven and pray for harvest, now becomes a bustling place for locals to take part in traditional activities, such as Tai Chi, dancing, kite flying, water calligraphy, etc.

Get up early, and drive for about 40 minutes (25 km) to the foot of Simatai Great Wall. Simatai Great Wall is a great section of great walls in Beijing to explore the wild features of Great Wall. It is divided into two sections by Yuanyang Lake. The western section is regular. Hikes are much more fascinated by the eastern section which is more challenging to climb but splendid to see the magnificent walls meandering up and down the mountain ridges that seem to have been sliced on both sides by a huge axe. The Wangjing Tower is the highest summit of the Simatai Great Wall which is 986 meters above sea level. To get to this summit tower, you have to walk over some unrestored paths.

Leave Simatai Great Wall, then drive back to Beijing.
