Mount Huashan is located in Shaanxi Province, 120 kilometers away from Xian. It is not only as one of the sacred Taoist mountains in China, but also a very challenging mountain for hiking lovers. Mount Hua is famous for its lofty peaks and steep paths. Some travelers who have walked the Skywalk (Plankroad in the Sky) describe Mount Hua Hiking as the “Most Dangerous Hike in the World”. Well, this used to be true many years ago when little safe facilities were constructed, such as the cableway, tight wire, handrails. Today, it is available for most travelers to climb from the foot to the top of the mountain.

Unlike other typical mountains with one central dominating peak, Mount Hua is spread out into five peaks situating close – South Peak, North Peak, East Peak, West Peak and Central Peak. The South Peak is the highest peak of Mount Hua with an elevation of 2164 meters. The North Peak has the entrance to other peaks. The Central Peak is the region for temples, guest house, etc.

Recommended Mount Huashan Hiking Trails

Thanks for the convenient cableway transfer, travelers can hike the classic trails which are located on the top of Mount Hua connecting five peaks. If you have two days to hike, you can see more, experience more at a slow pace.

1. One Day Hiking

To shorten the Mount Huashan trip in a day, you have to transfer between the foot and top of the mountain by cableway. You will firstly take cableway from East Gate to the North Peak with only about 10 minutes. The North Peak is the most important base for transfer, supply. Here you can also get good views of other four peaks, and watch far away. Three sides of North Peak are steep cliffs which are not possible for climbing. And only the fourth side is the entrance path to other peaks which is named “Ear Rubbing Cliff” for tourists have to climb further up only by pressing the ear close the cliff. Then you will hike about 2 hours to get to the East Peak. On route, you will visit the Heavenly Ladders, Riyue Cliff, Canglong Ling, Golden Lock Pass. Spend some time to views the breathtaking landscape on the East Peak. Continue hiking about 1.5 hours to the South Peak. You will firstly get to Nantian Gate, then get to the famous Plankroad in the Sky which is seen as the dangerous path in Huashan. Well, it is dependent on you to take this fearsome path. It is 4 meters long, 0.3 meters wide plank road built along the surface of a vertical cliff. Iron stake are nailed into the cliff, and wire ropes link the stakes together. Narrow planks are placed on the stakes for you to move steps. Upper the plank road, there are another lines of wire rope fixed on the surface of cliff. You can move steps while holding the rope. It usually take about 30~45 munities to finish the plank road.

It is only about 30 minutes walking to the South Peak. Here is the highest spot of Mount Hua. From South Peak, you can see other four lower peaks. Then take the last hiking about 40 minutes to the West Peak. The West Peak is also called Lotus Peak because of its unique shape. This peak is formed by a huge rock. Hence it's very steep.

Take cableway down to the foot of Mount Hua.

2. Two Days Hiking

With two day, you will see and experience fully about Mount Hua. You will walk about 20 minutes from Yuquan Temple to the entrance of Mount Hua. Then climb the stone stairs uphill to Huixin Rock. This section is easly with good road condition, which still has to take about 2 hours. From Huixin Rock, the real serious hiking starts. The stairs become narrow and steep. You must climb with fully concentration, and hold the iron chains tight. It takes about another 2 hours to get to the North Peak. Take a rest for sightseeing. Then you will leave North Peak to East Peak taking the same route of one day hiking. Accommodate on East Peak.

On the other day, get up very early to witness the breathtaking sunrise landscape. Then hike about 1.5 hours to the South Peak. This section is very steep. The famous Skywalk is located on route. South Peak is the highest peak on Mount Hua. The landscape here is fabulous. After sightseeing, follows a leisure downhill hiking to the Central Peak, which usually takes about 30 minutes. The Central Peak is relatively lower, and many Taoist temples and buildings gather here. Then hike to the West Peak to take cableway downhill to the foot of Mount Hua.

Tips: 1. you can pack some favorite foods and drinks with you because there is not much food you can buy on the mountain; 2. kindly notice you that the accommodation on the mountain is basic. There are only several guesthouses which have no private bathrooms and hot water supply for bathing.
