Lily’s 5 Days Memorable Wuhan Tour with Friends

Wuhan is the capital of China Hubei Province and the largest metropolis in central China. I was amazed by the board river when I visited the city, though I had been to many cities along Yangtze River. Yangtze River, the world’s third longest river and its largest tributary Han River rejoin in this city, which divides Wuhan into three districts: Hankou, Hanyang and Wuchang. The perfect central location makes Wuhan important from ancient time till now.

I made my visit in National Day Holiday, 2018 and had a wonderful leisurely holiday with my local friend. I did not plan much traditional tourist sites to see in Wuhan, which helped me avoid much more crowds in holiday. My local sweet friend took me to have lots of delicious food. It was my new way to explore one city.

I booked high speed train tickets earlier in holiday. It took me about 8 hours from Chengdu to Wuhan. It entered autumn and field was harvested. Yellow land and green trees made up of a beautiful autumn scene. That night I met my friend and walked together along the peaceful vast East Lake. Night breeze took away one day’s tiredness and hot air in daytime. Wuhan is called as one of Four Furnaces in China. I took heavier autumn clothes, a big mistake as it was still like summer in Wuhan.

The following mornings I followed with my friend to local restaurants for delicious breakfast. Locals see breakfast as important as lunch, and created kinds of food, which is enough for one person to eat in one month without repetition. Another character is that locals prefer to eating breakfast when they are running to office, instead of sitting in restaurant to enjoy a leisurely morning. In my four-day staying, I was indulging in eating local breakfast and planning what to try the next morning. If one day I came to Wuhan again, I would come to see these restaurants again!

I planned to see Hubei Provincial Museum, where tourists can enjoy a performance of chime bells, stone chimes and other ancient instruments. Unluckily it was closed in this National Day Holiday. My first stop in Wuhan was Gude Temple, a beautiful but a bit strange temple. The reason why I call it strange is that the Buddha Temple, built in 1877, owns characters of Catholic and Christianity churches. At the first impression, I was worried whether I went the wrong place. Surrounded was residential buildings and the entrance was behind a dusty plot. I was relaxed when entered. The temple still kept its serenity and queues of priests were doing their pilgrimage. Also tourists came to visit these unique buildings. Everything seemed work in order. I always believe that human make the building alive. Without human, buildings are useless and will die soon. These tourists and priests saved the temple. Yellow persimmons were hanging on trees.

During my stay in Wuhan, I was recommended to visit another temple - Guiyuan Temple. It is one of the four biggest temples for Buddhist meditation in Hubei as well as an important Buddhist temple in China. My friend said I would get the answer to what I seek for. It was a fascinating process too. I was told to think about one numeral before walking into Arhat Hall, then count numbers, and stopped in front of one of Arhans when I stopped counting. My Arhat told me to be more careful. When my friend came to get his fortune-telling, I was waiting outside to see tortoise in pond. They were enjoying the touch of sunshine.

Wuhan plays an important role in modern China. Most old buildings on road are mixed with a sense of western styles. I had a wonderful time walking on the street to appreciate those beautiful buildings. Sunset put a nice color on them and locals rode bike back home. I was obsessed again.

I had another one day walking in Wuhan University as well. It is my friend’s Alma Mater. Spring is the best season to admire blooming sakura with elegant school buildings. These buildings in the early 20 century, I found, mixed Chinese traditional roof with western structure. It was interesting to see buildings outside campus still imitate such styles.

Besides the beautiful architecture and delicious local food, I was fascinated by the beautiful Yangtze River. Trains running under bridge, heavy wind blew from the board river, which I felt my phone would be taken into river if I did not hold it tight. Trolley buses still work across bridge, which was not usually seen in most cities. It was cool to walk across Yangtze River Bridge. Afar was clear sky and Yangtze River become flat and board after it enter into the middle part, unlike the narrow part in misty Chongqing. Cruises sailed on the river to deliver goods. Wuhan is an important port city too.

Happy time always went fast and it has been about 2 years since my visiting. I hope I can visit the lovely city again and hope it will get much more beautiful after the virus in 2020.
